History 3

Isaac Newton (c1687)

As the age of Science gathered pace during the 17th century many people began working to understand the laws of nature. Why did things work? Isaac Newton was one of the foremost scientists of his time and formulated his laws of motion. He is most famous for his discovery of the law of gravity. When asked how he achieved such significant progress he replied, "If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants" By this he meant he had learned from the work of other great scientists.

Sir Isaac Newton is seen by many people as one of the most intelligent scientists of all time. His work covered many fields, but it is his work on motion that has effected the development of flight.

Newton’s 3 laws of motion.

1. A body will remain at rest or at a constant velocity unless acted upon by a force.

2. The change of motion of a body is proportional to the force acting upon it

3. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
