Our Visit To The Hull Daily Mail

On our fifth day we visited the Hull Daily Mail. Stuart Markham had given us a talk on the first day so he explained the program for the morning. He told us that we were in for a very exciting tour of the whole building, and that was certainly true.We were divided into three groups and we each had a guide. We then set off in groups to different parts of the building. We began in the Advertising section, and we saw all of the calls being taken. We then discovered that it costs over £4000 to have a colour advert on the right page and £3800 to have a colour advert on the left page. This is because when you open a newspaper then you always see the right hand page first.

Next we visited the report writing department where we saw all of the reporters busilly writing the days stories. Then we finally arrived at the printing centre. We learnt all about the colour variations and about the systems which it took to print all of the newspapers.Eventually when our plastic bags were on our shoes (to stop the ink sticking to our shoes) and our ear plugs in (to stop us going deaf) we experienced the really fast machine which printed up to 40,000 copies a minute. It was a breathtaking sight. We completed the tour with a talk on the Internet version of the Hull Daily Mail to be found at www.thisishull.co.uk
