Hull Daily Mail Visit

by Craig Constable and Chris Pinder

When we got into the building a man called Stewart Markham talked to us about the Hull Daily Mail. He talked about things like how many copies they sell a day, which is about 80-90 thousand, and about how many readers they have each day. Next we were split into three groups, 1 and 4 went together, groups 6 and 2 went together and groups 3and 5 went together. We had Stewart Markham as our tour guide.

Our arrival at the Hull Daily Mail - we all walked in in anticipation of a great morning.

First, Stewart Markham gave us a talk, as mentioned above.

We were shown around the advertising section first where we learned about classifieds, etc. Did you know that it costs a lot more to advertise on the right hand side of the paper than on the left? Some companies pay thousands of pounds for their advertisements which helps to pay for the paper.

Here is me (Chris) and Michael waiting to go into the editorial section.

Here are Katie and Liam who are looking at a photograph. We used a magnifying glass which helped us see that each picure is made up of little dots.

We were shown the A3 acetate pages which have the writing and pictures on them ready to go to the printing press.

The acetate pages are used to make aluminium sheets which have all the information for each page on them. These are wrapped around a drum and the ink is printed onto the paper.

Finally, the papers are folded and sorted ready to be sent out to newsagents.

Another great day at the EAZ Gifted and Talented Summer School!
