Those Magnificent Kids and Their Flying Machines!!!

On day two of the Summer School, we had the chance to make some model planes.

We had help from Andrew White who came from Bae Systems. The picture on the right shows what the finished plane SHOULD look like!

We made the plane following this pattern and using foam, balsa wood, a propellor and an elastic band.
After making and decorating them we went outside and had a little test flight to see how well we made them. After a few test flights we again went outside but timed them with a stop watch.

A lot of our planes didn't fly at all, either because they weren't balanced or we had wound the propellor the wrong way!

Lyndsey's plane had a best time of 5.8 seconds, beaten only by Tarik's with a time of 9.4 seconds. However, in one of the other groups Andrew's plane went for a record 1 minute 10 seconds - last seen dissappearing over the treetops, never to return!!!

Unfortunately, Paul's, Leanne's, Kadie's and Miss Taylor's planes all had minor accidents ( one with somebody's foot!) and remained grounded.

We then watched Andrew White as he showed us his electronically powered plane and flew it around the field. Later we had the chance to modify our planes by making wings bigger or weighting them.We just settled on repairing the damage though!!!
