Visit to RAF Duxford

On Wednesday 2nd August, the Gifted and Talented Summer School in Hull went to RAF Duxford Imperial War Museum in Cambridgeshire.

We had the chance to fly on a 1930's De Havilland Dragon Rapide Bi-plane. The following reports tell of our experiences during the day.

A MODEL CONCORDE IN HANGAR 1.

Today is the 6th day of the summer school for the gifted and talented children of Hull.Today we had to get up at 6:00am to be at school for seven. We had to set off early so that we could go way down south to Duxford. When we finaly got to Duxford (after three and a half hours in the coach, well worth the travelling).

After we had payed to get in we went to where the plane was and we had to get our times when we were going to fly,(our time was 12:50pm).In the mean time the Speedolite Enterprise went in the American Air Museum. The aircraft were GREAT.We were in there until it was our turn in the plane. When it was our turn Miss Taylor invited the coach driver to come in with us, he sat in the middle, behind Miss Taylor,(he kept pulling her pig tails).Plus he kept on teasing me because I didn't like the aeroplane, I didn't like it because it looked like it was about to fall out of the sky or something, spooky or what? After that it was really good because we were going in and out aeroplanes, later we went in the shop and then we went into the adventure playground. Miss Taylor went and had a great time in the playground.I went down the slide as a Concorde, it was great.

At the end of that we went into the coach and came home. At the end of the day I thought that the best bit was the landing from when we flew(I hated the flying). My favourite plane was the Concorde because of the way that it is shaped and how fast it goes.INFACT THE WHOLE DAY WAS A GREAT DAY, EXCELLENT OR WHAT?

Today we went to Duxford and the coach came to pick us up at 7:ooam in the morning. On the bus Kadie and I were listening to music. It was a long drive. When we got there we saw all the planes it was fabulous. We were group 6 so we were last. I was nervous, when every one got off they all told us how good it was. But I was still a bit nervous about going on the plane. While group 5 was in the plane we went to The American Air Museum, inside were lots of planes and lots of imformation. I enjoyed it. After that it was our turn on the bi-plane.I did go on I was a bit scared but I enjoyed it.When we got back I wanted to go on it again then we went in hangar 2 and we saw the little kids play area and it had a sign. It said we weren't allowed to go in so we went to the adventure park I liked to the go on the seasore thing but I didn't really know what it was called. Then we went to the coach and on the way home we went to sleep.

Our Visit To Duxford By Paul Arnold.

Today is the day we went to Duxford to fly in the Dragon Rapide. The experience of actually flying in the aeroplane was unforgettable. The way you feel is remarkably suprising as you expect it to be very frightening and very very sickening but it is not when your up in the air it is very overwhelming.Well the day started off a 7:00am when adults and their children arrived outside the summer school for a day that they shall never forget for the rest of their lives. We arrived at Duxford at around 11:00am - 11:30am and then we got to know who's doing what at what times.at first we went to see some real American war planes e.g. F-111 ( The Chief ) the Fighting Sam ,Super Sabre and the Strato Fortress.

The best part of the day was the plane ride and I'm sure everyone will agree with me.That wasn't the only good thing about the day though as the whole day was absoloutley magnificent especially going in the concorde. We went nearly everywhere but we didnt manage to go in hanger 2 which was a great shame but overall it was a very fun day.

Today we went to Duxford. first we went to the American War planes and looked at planes like the Chief and the Fighting Sam and Strato Fortress. We went flying in an old plane and had a tour of Duxford from the air. After the flight we went to hanger 1 and looked at other planes like the commercial jets and the helicopters. We even had a look in a Concorde. Then we went in the adventure playground and went on the fly by swing. On the way home I wrote this diary.

A VEIW FROM UP IN THE BI-PLANE.

THIS IS A WORLD WAR 2 FIGHTER PLANE.

Today we went to Duxford, we were all very excited. When we got there we went to see the plane that we were going on(a De Havilland Dragon Rapide.) After we saw the plane my group Speedolite Enterprise was not going on the plane until 12:50p.m.. So Miss Taylor took us to the toilet and then we went into the American Air Museum this was a collection of historic American combat aircraft which tells the story of the U.S air power, especially in the second world war. Then we went on the plane,I was frightened before I went on the plane, but when I got up there I thought it was a miracle and I thought it was fantastic. After we got off the plane we went in hangar 1(British aircraft and airliners) and I took some more photos of the planes I can not think of the names but they were for fighting and bombing, then we went in the park and Tarik and Paul had to help me on the glider swing. Then I took two more photos and we got on the coach and went back to Sutton Park Primary where our parents were waiting for us.
