The aims of the Children's University and the Kingston upon Hull Education Action zone revolve around raising standards by developing student's learning skills through new and innovative ways of teaching. The desired aim of the programme is to enhance the young people's literacy and oracy skills but at the same time develop their own  'learning to learn' skills. Elements of the work done by Gardener on Multiple Intelligence and co-operative learning strategies developed by a number of writers including Johnson and Johnson, Bob Slaven and Don Brown and Charlotte Thompson, have formed the basis of the learning styles being developed by the programme.

The modules are designed to be fun, challenging and memorable for students, mentors and teachers. The model has been successfully developed in primary schools and is now being extended into the secondary sector. This module is interesting in that it has been developed and delivered by the Science Faculty within the school and not by English teachers.

The module 'Power of the Elements' was designed to bring exciting science and literacy together for a group of Year 7 students at Winifred Holtby School. The programme has been divided into four areas, Earth, Water, Fire and the visit to Magna.

Examples of the work undertaken can be found on the following pages.
