It was essential that a 'Fresh Start'
school in the position Kingswood High, with a history of failure and a
poor reputation with the local community, managed its future public
relations well. There were bound to be times when the news was not good
and the school needed to be aware of this.
Along with the EAZ, the school built a relationship
with the local newspaper based on honesty and openness. When the news
was not positive they opened the doors to the media and were frank and
honest. For their part, the Hull Daily Mail wanted to see the school
succeed and as a partner with the EAZ were always willing to print good
news stories whenever possible. This combination of not making excuses
or laying blame when things did not go well and coverage of success and
innovation has led to a much improved reputation amongst the local
community and excellent relations with the local media.
There are bound to be difficult times when schools are
in challenging circumstances and have a high profile but the attitude of
Kingswood High is not to dodge the issues but to discuss them. This is
not always easy, especially when a school goes into 'special measures'
but it must be done if the school is to win respect and the support of
the local community.
