Changes in the state education system have resulted in head teachers and governors being given an increasingly important role in the day to day management of their schools.

The governing body of a 'Fresh Start' school such as Kingswood High School will quickly discover just how wide this responsibility can be. For it includes recruiting a head teacher and other members of the senior management team, establishing a strategic framework (including aims, objectives, policies etc.) and publishing a prospectus for the new school. An awful lot of work to be done in a very short space of time before the start of the new school year, something Kingswood could not have done without a lot of help from the LEA and the then newly formed Bransholme and District EAZ.

Kingswood was also very lucky in having, right from the start, a very strong and committed governing body. As with all schools some of the governors, such as the principal of Wilberforce Sixth Form College were appointed by the local authority whilst others such as the Director of the EAZ or a producer from the Hull Truck Theatre were deliberately co-opted by the governing body to further strengthen the team. However, perhaps the most important governors have been from the local community, the parent governors, who have been encouraged to play an important role in setting the positive ethos within the school and working with the school to develop social policies.

Kingswood has had its ups and downs since it opened three years ago but it is now firmly established as one of the most successful 'Fresh Start' schools in the country. Its success owes much to the support it has received from the EAZ and other partners

Some examples of this support include:

Building support for the school both with the community and local politicians.

Developing a very successful Accelerated Learning Programme which is now firmly embedded in the teaching and learning programme within the school.

Helping to introduce the innovatory 'school-within-a-school' for Year 7 to smooth the transfer from primary into secondary education

Establishing strong links with feeder primary schools.

Helping to secure sponsorship for school activities from employers and other organisations.

Day to day support with all manner of issues.
