The school has undertaken a successful joint training day with St Mary Queen
of Martyrs. A facilitator has been appointed and the school is at the
beginning of a programme to implement Co-operative learning in all of its
classrooms. Careful consideration is being given as to the most appropriate
ways of ensuring a consistent whole school approach is adopted.
Highlands school is involved in several related initiatives including the Intensified Support Programme and the 'Talk Project' all of which need to be integrated and developed successfully within the school. The work involving the Talk Project and Co-operative learning is closely linked and the school is currently in the process of streamlining the terminology throughout the school to ensure progression and continuity of the concepts and ideas involved. Each class has discussed 'Active listening' and has presented their ideas in the form of a T-chart which has been displayed in the classroom and referred to in lessons. As the children have become familiar with the expectations of active listening, these prompts have been taken down. The school has adopted a universal hand signal that is used to communicate the zero noise message to the children. During weekly planning meetings, staff discuss and highlight the opportunities available in forthcoming lessons to introduce and implement an array of 'co-operative' techniques. Within the school there is a display clearly offering a wide range of techniques and strategies that could be adopted during lessons. The facilitator of the co-operative learning project and the the coordinator of the talk project are regularly collaborating in developing ideas on how to implement exciting and innovative methods of improving oracy in the school's everyday life. In January a whole school INSET is planned. At this meeting we will agree on the wholes school approach to co-operative learning/talk project and agree on how the school will move forward. |
